The Remnant Dust economy in Phantom Blade Zero: what to upgrade first, where materials come from and how the free respec window works.

Quick Answer: What Should You Upgrade First?

Both equipped weapons to level 5 — the first milestone ability is the biggest single power jump in the game (Jagged Steel's Bleed special, the Sanguine line's 20-second damage buff), and refunds are free up to level 10, so the first choice is risk-free. After that: your main boss weapon to level 10, then your Medicine (Pangzhen unlocks the upgrade), then the 15/25 milestones as materials allow. Accessories polish in parallel and unlock extra slots in the Village of Lu.

Quick Answer: What Should You Upgrade First?
PriorityTargetWhy
1Both weapons → Lv 5First milestone abilities; free refund makes this risk-free
2Main boss weapon → Lv 10Falling Petal Strike-class effects multiply execution windows
3Medicine upgrade (Pangzhen)More charges and stronger healing for the boss marathon
4Accessories polishPassive damage windows (e.g. Token of Pursuit: +7% vs Guard-Broken)
5Lv 15/25 milestonesEndgame passives and the Perfect Combo class of unlocks
Refund rule: full free revert to level 10; past 10 and past 20 costs a reforge talisman per revert. Talismans are plentiful — treat every build as an experiment. One exception: milestone abilities re-lock while reverted, so a build swap at level 10+ is worth its talisman.

Remnant Dust Income

Dust funds every weapon upgrade, and the world pays it for curiosity: glowing scrolls, shrines, readable lore and prompted objects all grant Remnant Dust. The income habit is the same as the fragment habit — sweep each region fully before moving on, because Dust has no farm better than simply examining everything the developers placed. Materials are family-locked (a Heavy Blade line eats different metals than a Twin Blade line), which is the quiet argument for the one-one-handed-plus-one-two-handed loadout: both families' material pools stay warm.

The Upgrade Materials Map

Materials drop by region tier and family: the Scarlet Wraithblade line, for example, drinks Broadplate Metal and Solvent. Vendors sell the common tiers, bosses drop the rare ones, and the region pages list each area's crafting-relevant pickups. The upgrading rhythm that works: one full region sweep (Dust plus materials plus fragments) funds one full weapon tier — the game's pacing assumes you arrive at each region boss with the previous region's ledger cashed in.
