Quick Answer: How Does Progression Work in Phantom Blade Zero?
There are no character levels. Every permanent stat point comes from three collectible families โ Blackstone Fragments (+10% Attack Power and Guard Break per completed Blackstone), Sha-Chi Amber Fragments (+10% maximum Sha-Chi per Amber) and Memory Flowers (+5-7% max HP each) โ plus one ability tree funded by whole Blackstones, and weapon upgrades running on Remnant Dust. The fragments follow a four-to-one rule: four shards fuse into one whole. In practice your power curve is the map: the players who sweep each region's collectibles before its boss are simply stronger, forever.
| System | Currency / Item | Permanent Gain |
|---|---|---|
| Blackstone Fragments | 4 shards โ 1 Blackstone | +10% Attack Power & Guard Break |
| Sha-Chi Amber Fragments | 4 shards โ 1 Amber | +10% maximum Sha-Chi |
| Memory Flowers | Whole flower or scattered petals | +5-7% maximum HP + story lore |
| Ability tree | Whole Blackstones | Active/passive unlocks (Redirect Force, Masterful Flowโฆ) |
| Weapon upgrades | Remnant Dust + materials | Damage, Guard Break, milestone abilities at Lv 5/10/15/25 |
Remnant Dust: The Real Currency
Remnant Dust is the universal upgrade currency, and its income stream is the game's quiet genius: investigating lore objects โ glowing scrolls, shrines, readable notes and prompted NPCs โ pays Dust across the whole world. The habit that compounds is examining everything: lore is not just worldbuilding here, it is the upgrade budget. Combined with the free respec rule (full refunds up to weapon level 10), the economy is deliberately forgiving: nothing you spend is ever truly wasted.
What Progression Does Not Cover
Three things sit outside this section and matter to it: the weapon upgrade milestones (levels 5/10/15/25) live on the weapons themselves and are covered in the weapons section; the Banyan trials are listed here because their Hearts gate ability nodes, but they are combat challenges first; and difficulty has no stat component โ Hellwalker changes enemy behavior, not your numbers, which is exactly why the fragment ledger is the real difficulty dial.
Reading Order for This Section
The fragments page is the collector's ledger โ every documented Blackstone location by region, the Amber rule, and the Memory Flower mechanics including the pre-boss collection question. The abilities page covers the Blackstone-funded tree: what each landmark ability does and what it costs. The upgrading page is the Remnant Dust economy: what to level first, how the free respec works, and where the Banyan trials gate the last abilities.
